Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TC-bDQZbXd0 In this video I give an introduction to smart contracts in ethereum. First I explain what accounts are in a simpler currency only blockchain. Then I show how ethereum introduces a second type of account: a code controlled account (aka smart contract). This type of account does not have a private key but instead is controlled by code. It can store ether, just like user accounts, or it can keep a balance of 0 and be used to deliver some other function within the context of an application. I then give examples of how you can use smart contracts. If you want to tip this video here is an ethereum address for this video: 0xd6d1f455814211e3a79a03faa7bc18c74ca9163c

One growing concern that the Universa platform hopes to take out of the equation is blockchain bloating. If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of blockchain bloating, all you need to know is that it’s essentially a data storage issue. The increasing number of transactions means that more data is circulated and therefore needs to be actively stored. This means that block sizes must increase in order to keep up with the all the transactions. Bloating takes place when transactions fill blocks to capacity. It’s a growing problem for blockchain heavyweights (particularly Bitcoin), as it can lead to an increas...

Hawk: The Blockchain Model of Cryptography and Privacy-Preserving Smart Contracts Andrew Miller (University of Maryland) Presented at the 2016 IEEE Symposium on Security & Privacy May 23–25, 2016 San Jose, CA http://www.ieee-security.org/TC/SP2016/ ABSTRACT Emerging smart contract systems over decentralized cryptocurrencies allow mutually distrustful parties to transact safely without trusted third parties. In the event of contractual breaches or aborts, the decentralized blockchain ensures that honest parties obtain commensurate compensation. Existing systems, however, lack transactional privacy. All transactions, including flow of money between pseudonyms and amount transacted, are exposed on the blockchain. We present Hawk, a decentralized smart contract system that does not store financial transactions in the clear on the blockchain, thus retaining transactional privacy from the public's view. A Hawk programmer can write a private smart contract in an intuitive manner without having to implement cryptography, and our compiler automatically generates an efficient cryptographic protocol where contractual parties interact with the blockchain, using cryptographic primitives such as zero-knowledge proofs. To formally define and reason about the security of our protocols, we are the first to formalize the blockchain model of cryptography. The formal modeling is of independent interest. We advocate the community to adopt such a formal model when designing applications atop decentralized blockchains.

There’s now platforms being built that are called second and third generation blockchains, I’m sure fourth and fifth are coming too. Today let’s take a look at what Bitcoins kids and grand kids can do. First generation blockchains focus on moving value, maintaining a ledger, ideal payment systems. Think of Bitcoin, Litecoin, Monero, and Dash to name a few. These functions represent the core of why bitcoin was created. Another core aspect to Bitcoin is the fact that it was created to be open source. By making the code behind Bitcoin open source, Satoshi Nakamoto gave anyone the opportunity to learn from, build on and expand beyond it. This is how we’ve made it to the point of having what are called second and third generation blockchains. Second generation blockchains are those like Ethereum, Ethereum Classic, NEO and QTUM to name a few. These are considered second generation because they’ve taken this idea of recording transactions on a blockchain and expanded it to incorporate programming languages. These second generation blockchains have unleashed smart contracts. These allow for customizable transactions. You can custom create transactions to execute however best fits the needs of the parties involved. Now we’ve come to third generation blockchains, these present themselves as blockchains that can service massive amounts of people and self-govern. This is when that term “scale” comes to action. Bitcoin’s huge network is what makes it the most robust, secure and decentralized. But even so, it is showing us how difficult it can be to scale when the network experiences huge influxes of transactions due to an exponential growth of users. The larger Bitcoin’s network grows, the more decentralized it becomes, and some could argue that the harder it is to reach consensus on how to deal with particular issues. The beauty of open source is that it gives developers the ability to see how a network is designed, and now with the ability to see how things are panning out, they can make changes right from the start in an effort to avoid trouble in the future. Third generation blockchains have self-governance at their core. This can be seen with, but is not limited to the following blockchains: Bitshares, Steem, Lisk, ARK These blockchains all use Delegated Proof of Stake. Although you can certainly argue that this is indeed a type of centralization or bottleneck in an otherwise decentralized system, it’s a system that allows every participant of the network to vote regardless of the amount of coins that they hold. Delegated Proof of Stake works like this: There are a set number of Witnesses, usually a small number, who work to mine blocks and monitor the network. These Witnesses gain this position by being voted in. Because all votes have equal weight this can be seen as a decentralization of the voting process, i.e. it isn’t limited to masternode holders like in Proof of Stake consensus. Because there is a smaller group of individuals working to secure the network, needed changes can occur much more efficiently. Also, because Witnesses are reliant of votes, it is in their best interest to pay attention to the concerns of the other participants on the network. As for serving the masses and being able to scale, it’s interesting to see how the developers of the Bitshares blockchain have figured out a way to make the processing done by nodes a much more efficient activity. It’s called graphene, not the ultra light, super durable material, a graphene blockchain is one that is able to process transactions very quickly and efficiently. Bitshares is not the only blockchain that’s designed in this way, Dan Larimer brought it to the Steem blockchain and to EOS as well.

Coin review of Universa blockchain protocol, the ICO, Universa Smart Money, & UTN / UNTP tokens. Here’s a closer look at the project led by Alexander Borodich & John McAfee as an advisor. It’s a growing problem for blockchain heavyweights (particularly Bitcoin), as it can lead to an increase in fees and slower synchronization times between the network and a desktop wallet client. Universa aims to fix this bloating issue through side-chains and its Notary Cloud. Since there isn’t any mining involved, the participating nodes are rewarded via transaction fees for the validation and execution of contracts. The entire network is designed around the concept of transaction, around contracts and their execution. Universa doesn’t build a single full ledger by stacking blocks. Instead, Universa clients apply each set of changes into a separate contract chain (known as a C-Chain) to the previous state with the outcome being vectorized and hashed. According to Universa’s whitepaper, with each action that is to be performed, all nodes receive the present state of the contract and the source of the operation that’s about to be performed. Both state and source are verified by hash-sum to be identical to the stored current state in the contract’s side-chain. The operation is applied and a new state is hashed, which is agreed upon by 90% consensus. After a short period of time, which is currently set at 10 days, nodes are free to discard the contract as well as the state and only need to retain the hashes. Everything else, including transaction records, digital signatures and contract sources can be verified in the associated Notary Cloud, which is separate from the blockchain. Universa uses a Proof-Of-State system. Trusted actors verify any change in state, which is then approved by consensus extremely fast; ten milliseconds or less. Since each contract maintains its own chain of state, it can perform actions asynchronously without impacting the others. The blockchain itself is formed by a direct acyclic graph, also known as DAG technology. DAG represents the combined changes of state taking place. There's growing support for DAG, arguing that its technological potential may eventually replace the blockchain at some point in the future. Its name might sound complex, but the concept behind DAG is rather simple. It ensures that the same functions are being executed as those within a blockchain, but through a different method. Transactions are not grouped into blocks. Instead, each new transaction needs to confirm one or more previous transactions. A smart contract within Universa is just executable script data stored in tree structures. Information is stored in a key-value format, with each key representing a global unique address and a value that can be either a fixed value, dynamically executing scripts, binary executable logic or even references to other trees and addresses. UTN (Universa's native token; UTNP is its current placeholder) has a ton of advantages that become obvious even to those who aren't crypto-inclined, especially when compared to Bitcoin or Ethereum. Compared to Bitcoin, it's 1,000 times faster & 100 times cheaper, all the while offering a fixed price and no bloating. It’s also 60 times faster than Ethereum. When it comes to scalability, Universa’s nodes allow 20,000 transactions per second, while Ethereum allows only 15 and Bitcoin allows only 3 -6. The 90% consensus algorithm ensures a high level of trust with a low risk of fraud. Much of the network’s increased performance is due to the absence of mining and the design of their protocols and smart contracts. As Universa’s CEO, Alexander Borodich has made his mark as a venture investor, digital media strategist & serial entrepreneur. Universa’s CTO, Sergey Chernov, has more than 25 years of experience in development; 17 of them in cryptography. Art director Alex Dovnar has 10 years of experience as an art director & 20 years of experience in digital & print design. With 12 lead developers, 9 mobile developers, 8 QA managers, 5 user interface & user experience specialists, & 3 project managers, Borodich & his team plan on paving the road for a complete blockchain revolution!
